Summer's midnight sun

The golden sunlight of the midnight sun not only brings light and joy to body and mind, but also brings life to the whole of Lofoten. Most campsites are right down at sea level or very close to the sea, and what greater happiness is there than opening the door with a cup of hot coffee in hand and breathing in clean, fresh air from the Norwegian Sea. There are countless experiences waiting for you, whether you are berry picking for the juicy orange vitamin bombs cloudberry, whether you want to put the scuba set on and explore the world underneath the surface, or whether you go hiking to some of the world's most beautiful mountains to get a sight you won't soon forget. Lofoten is an island of opportunities, from surfing, fishing and kayaking trips to shopping and cozy local cafes and shops. The buzzing city life in the summer is quite special.

Northern lights over snowy mountains

Despite summer's buzzing city life and the many activities, winter on Lofoten can be something quite unique. Winter is characterised by dusk and darkness, where the majority of the hours of the day are dark, windy and with temperatures +/- 0–5 degrees. The winter darkness lures many tourists here to experience Miss Aurora Borealis dancing in the sky in the most beautiful colours. Lofoten is located at the 67th and 68th latitude, which provides optimal opportunities to experience the northern lights countless times during the winter.

If you want to experience the northern lights, find a place without disturbing background lighting. My recommendation is at Eggum beach, Ytresand, Unstad, Flakstad, or Myrland beach, which are all isolated places where there is minimal light-noise from the cities. Here you can sit inside in a campervan, motorhome or similar, and experience the true forces of nature outside while you sit safe and warm sipping your cup of coffee.

Winter is high season for many fishermen. At this time, the large-grown skrei migrate to the coast of Lofoten. It is the best quality cod you can find, the meat is white and pure, the taste is delicate and fresh and is something you have to taste to understand. Another option is to catch your own fish from the shore or with one of the local fishing guides along the coast of Lofoten to get the full experience with a catch, cook and eat!

Like living in a painting

Drive through Lofoten and experience the popular villages such as Å, Reine, Nusfjord, Henningsvær and Svolvær. You will experience what a treasure trove of culture and history this archipelago has to offer. The charming fishing villages are characterised by the fishermen's iconic red huts with the dried fish hanging in the homes. You will experience a buzzing city life with small farm shops that sell tasty local delicacies made from nature's ingredients and unique works of art, such as glassblowing and painting. You must do yourself the favour of experiencing Glashytta on Vikten or Engelskmannsbrygga in Henningsvær.

If you are from a big city, you will experience that the locals on Lofoten are distinguished by a very generous quality. Time. People living on Lofoten always have time. Time to talk to those we meet. Time to lend a helping hand. Time to enjoy life in small ways. Once you've visited this island paradise, you will leave with a heart full of happy memories and a camera roll that has captured all those unforgettable moments.

Camping on the beautiful island kingdom, Lofoten, is the ultimate freedom - you cannot find this anywhere else in the world... Lofoten warmly welcomes you.
