Experiences

So what should you experience while you are in Lofoten? Below is a small selection of activities and opportunities for you during your stay:

  • Lofoten has a strong connection to the Viking Age, at the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg you can experience this time period with your own eyes, e.g. experience the world's longest Viking longhouse.
  • Fishing has always been and continues to be Lofoten's lifeblood. The world's best cod fishing takes place every winter along the coast of Lofoten, and for the past 1,000 years Lofoten has exported dried fish to the rest of Europe. You can read more about fishing on Lofoten here. Every year, the world championship in fishing for the famous skrei cod is held in Henningsvær. A big folk festival and a time when everyone from near and far comes to participate. You can also experience the amazing fishing here on Lofoten, e.g. book a guided fishing trip.
  • Most hotels sell Lofoten Arctic Water - it is some of the world's purest water, which has not undergone any kind of distillation or additives. The water is drawn from the lake Mørkdalsvatnet, which is surrounded by mountains in the heart of Lofoten.
  • A clear classic on Lofoten is brown cheese and cloudberry jam at the hotel breakfast! Uhmm, the unique taste of brown cheese combined with an explosion of berry delicacy gives you an extra kick for the morning.
  • Wind, weather and magnificent light conditions have always been a source of inspiration for artists. You will find countless art galleries and photo exhibitions to visit to satisfy your creativity.
  • Lofoten has a Country Festival every year, where people gather around all the small stalls that fill the centre of Leknes. There is everything from the locals' small sausage-makers, to bouncy castles for the children, bread baking with scouts, to stand-up comedy and parties in the evening. Next year will be from 31/8 - 3/9 2023.
  • Whale watching is not just a beautiful experience in the most gentle way. The whale safari gives everyone, children and adults alike, a deep respect for our wildlife and endangered animal species - once we have gained an insight into the animals' lives in their own habitat - then we understand the importance of taking good care of them. Come along and experience the whales up close.

On Lofoten islands you will find plenty of opportunities. There is room for everyone, so come as you are and live out your dreams. Because of the landscape and its diversity, you can hike, horseback riding, fish, surf, sail and dive here. The activities and possibilities are endless. Nature is always open, and so are Lofoten's magnificent hotels. We welcome you.
